What is a mailing list?

A mailing list is basically a place for discussions. It works using email. Basically, if you send a message to the mailing list, a copy of that message is sent out to everyone on the list. It's the same for replying.

To make things manageable, it's recommended that you set up a filter to shift mailing list messages into their own area. This enables to you to separate out mailing list messages from your everyday messages.

Some of the more technical of us may document this on the wiki (I'll update this page when instructions become available).

Of course you have to be registered with the mailing list or your message will be rejected outright (similarly you have to send messages with the email address you registered with). This is to avoid Spam (not the ham-like product).

Why a mailing list over a forum?

Forum's can be used to great effect. However it means that you have to load up a page and keep refreshing to see any activity. Whereas an email client does this for us.

In addition, it makes it feel a little more natural. Most of us probably load up our email clients first thing in the morning anyway. It takes next to no time to quickly scan the subjects, and see if there's anything you're interested in or may be able to help others with.

Before you get started...

We're fairly informal around here although manners are always good. Please have a look at the Acceptable Use Policy for tips on avoiding a tap on the shoulder.
